About Tsugaru Ori
Tsugaru ori is a hand-woven cotton striped textile from the Tsugaru region centered on Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture. A striped cotton woven by farming women as a winter side business from the mid-Edo period, it has been a fabric of daily life supporting life through Tsugaru's harsh winters. Characterized by simple vertical stripes and durability, it has long been used for kimono, work clothes, and futon fabric. Workshops around Hirosaki City continue to pass down the traditional striped cotton by hand loom, preserved as a regional traditional craft.
