About Hakata Weaving
Hakata weaving is silk fabric from Hakata-ku, Fukuoka City. Starting in 1241 when merchant Manda Yazaemon brought techniques from Song Dynasty China, the '献上博多' (tribute Hakata) presented to the Shogunate during the Edo period became famous. The distinctive 'Kenjo pattern' of four motifs creates a firm, well-tensioned obi fabric due to its unique weaving method.
