About Echizen Habutae Silk
Echizen habutae is a flat-woven silk fabric produced mainly in Echizen City, Fukui Prefecture. With a history dating to the Muromachi period, it remains Japan's leading habutae production area, accounting for the majority of domestic habutae output. A lustrous white plain-weave fabric made from fine raw silk woven densely, it is supplied to dye craftsmen nationwide as the base material for formal kimono, kimono linings, and obi fabric. Its whiteness and luster are so refined it is described as making 'the sound of rustling silk.'
