About Kyo Hyogu (Kyoto Mounting Craft)
Kyo Hyogu is the craft of mounting and framing—hanging scrolls, folding screens, sliding doors, and scrolls—produced in Kyoto. Developed from the Heian period as a technique for protecting and displaying paintings and calligraphy for the imperial court and temples, it features dignified finishing combining premium materials such as thin Mino paper, gold leaf, and brocade. The skills of Kyoto mounting craftspeople, also essential for cultural property conservation, are applied to art restoration domestically and internationally.
