About Yonaguni Ori
Yonaguni ori is a silk textile from Yonaguni Island, the westernmost island of Japan, in Yonaguni Town, Yaeyama District, Okinawa Prefecture. With a history dating to the Ryukyu Kingdom era, it is characterized by a unique technique also called 'dondон-ori' (don-don weaving). Mixed weaving using silk warp and cotton weft is common, and in addition to simple vertical stripe and plaid designs, there are also kasuri patterned textiles. It is a rare textile culture preserved by Japan's westernmost island.
