About Kihachijo
Kihachijo is silk fabric produced on Hachijojima Island, Tokyo. Silk threads are dyed using plants unique to the island (kobunagrass, madami, and oak) and woven by hand. The traditional three-color stripe and plaid patterns in yellow, reddish-brown, and black are called 'Ki-hachijo,' 'Tobi-hachijo,' and 'Kuro-hachijo' respectively. With a history as tribute to the Shogunate during the Edo period, a small number of island craftsmen continue production today.
