About Yonezawa Weaving
Yonezawa weaving is silk fabric from Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture. The development was triggered in the mid-Edo period when Uesugi Yozan, lord of the Yonezawa domain, encouraged sericulture and weaving to revive the domain's finances. Importing techniques from Nishijin, it established the silk weaving industry of Yonezawa. Featuring patterned weave and pre-dyed fabric using silk and synthetic fibers, it also has a history of export industry development in the Meiji and Taisho periods.
