About Kumejima Tsumugi
Kumejima tsumugi is a silk textile produced on Kumejima Island, Okinawa Prefecture. With a history stretching from the late Muromachi period, silk yarn dyed with natural dyes from island plants and mud is woven on a hand loom. The distinctive mud dyeing process called "guuteen" creates uniquely deep brown and black colors. It is a traditional craft where plant and mud dyeing and hand weaving are unified.
