About Miyako Jofu
Miyako jofu is a linen fabric woven on Miyako Island, Okinawa. Said to have begun in the late 16th century as tribute cloth paid to the Satsuma Domain during the Ryukyu Kingdom era. After hand-spinning ramie fiber and weaving on a hand loom, the cloth is softened with a wooden mallet and bleached with seawater and sand. So thin and light it is called "cicada wings," it is the finest of all Japanese linen textiles.
